Overview

The PG Department of English at Don Bosco College (Co-Ed), Yelagiri Hills, stands today as a distinguished and intellectually vibrant academic community that seamlessly integrates scholarship, creativity, communication, and research into a transformative educational experience. Established in 2012 as a Language Department dedicated to strengthening foundational English proficiency, it evolved into offering B.A. English (2014) and later M.A. English (2017), marking its growth as a dynamic centre for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The Communicative English Academy (CEA), launched in 2016, remains instrumental in enhancing foundational English competence for first-year students across all disciplines. The department fosters intellectual growth through its vibrant associations—the English Literary Association and the Junior Research Forum—offering students platforms for competitions, workshops, presentations, and creative expression.

The annual BosLit Literature Festival is a flagship event showcasing literary talent, academic dialogue, and cultural vibrancy through competitions, national/international conferences, and student publications. The department also publishes the BosLit pamphlet, the peer-reviewed BosLit Journal of Language and Literature (BJLL), and the English for Life workbook.

The department has a consistent record of winning overall championships in prestigious institutions across Tamil Nadu. With NET/SET-qualified faculty, strong student admissions, and a culture of academic excellence, the PG Department of English continues to nurture articulate communicators, thoughtful scholars, creative thinkers, and responsible citizens.

மாணவர்களுடைய படைப்பாக்கத் திறன்களை வெளிக்கொண்டு வருதல், பிற கல்லூரிகளில் நடைபெறும் போட்டிகளுக்கும், தமிழ்நாடு அரசின் போட்டித் தேர்வுகளுக்கும் மாணவர்களை தயார் செய்து வெற்றி பெறச் செய்தல், மாணவர்களின் வாசிப்பு திறனை மேம்படுத்துதல் ஆகியன தமிழ்த்துறையின் செயல்பாடுகள் ஆகும்

  • தமிழ் மொழியின் பெருமையையும் முக்கியத்துவத்தையும் காக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகளை முன்னெடுத்தல்.
  • வாசிப்பு பழக்கத்தின் அவசியத்தை மாணவர்களிடம் உருவாக்குதல்.
  • தமிழ் மொழியின் நவீன இலக்கிய வளர்ச்சியை வெளிக்கொணர்ந்து, இக்காலத்திற்குப் பொருந்துமாறு செயல்படுத்துதல்.
  • நவீன தொழில்நுட்பத் துறையில் தமிழ் மொழியின் பயன்பாடுகளை அதிகரித்து, அதன் அடையாளத்தை நிலைநாட்டுதல்.
  • போஸ்கோ நாடக இயக்கத்தின் மூலம் சமூக விழிப்புணர்வை மாணவர்களுக்கும் பொதுமக்களுக்கும் ஏற்படுத்துதல்.
  • இலக்கியங்கள் மற்றும் வரலாற்று சான்றுகள் குறித்து கருத்தரங்குகள், பட்டிமன்றங்கள் மற்றும் பயிலரங்கம் போன்ற நிகழ்ச்சிகள் நடத்துதல்.

தமிழ்த்துறை – ஓர் மீள்பார்வை

2012 ஆம் ஆண்டு கலை அறிவியல் கல்லூரி தொடங்கப்பட்டது. அன்று முதல் இயங்கி வருகின்ற பாடப் பிரிவுகளுக்கு மொழிப்பாடம் கற்பிக்கும் வேளையில் தமிழ்த்துறை செயல்பட்டு வருகின்றது. அன்று தொட்டு இன்று வரை மொழிப்பாடம், கலாச்சாரம், வரலாற்றுச் சான்றுகள், இலக்கிய படைப்புகள் வழி வெளியாகும் சிந்தனைகள் என அனைத்தையும் தமிழ்த்துறை கற்பித்து வருகின்றது. அன்று முதல் குழந்தை இயேசு, முனைவர் தி. ஆ. இரமேஷ், முனைவர் இராஜா மற்றும் முனைவர் அ. குமார் ஆகியோர் துறைத்தலைவர்களாக செயலாற்றி தங்கள் பங்களிப்பை நல்கினர். 2022 முதல் முனைவர் த. லதா அம்மையார் அவர்கள் தமிழ்த்துறை தலைவராக இன்று வரை பதவி வகித்து வருகின்றார்.

நடுவர்கோன் வேதநாயகம் தமிழ் மன்றம்

நடுவர்கோன் வேதநாயகம் தமிழ் மன்றம் 2014 - 2015 ஆம் கல்வியாண்டில் தொடங்கப்பட்டது. இம்மன்றத்தின் வாயிலாக மாதந்தோறும் வாசிப்புத் திறனை ஊக்குவிக்க புத்தகப்பயணம் நிகழ்ச்சி நடத்துதல், மாணவர்களின் படைப்பாற்றலை ஊக்குவிக்கும் வகையில் தேடல் காலாண்டு இதழ் வெளியிடுதல், இயல், இசை மற்றும் நாடகத்தை மேம்படுத்தும் வகையில் ஆண்டு தோறும் முத்தமிழ் விழா நடத்துதல், தமிழ் மொழி சார்ந்து சொற்பொழிவுகள், கருத்தரங்குகள் மற்றும் பயிலரங்குகள் ஆகியவற்றை நடத்தி தமிழ் வளர்ச்சிக்கு உறுதுணையாக நடுவர்கோன் வேதநாயகம் தமிழ் மன்றம் செயலாற்றுகிறது.

Objectives

As an academic centre, the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies serves multiple roles in promoting national security awareness and strategic scholarship:

  • Capacity Building – To nurture analytical abilities and develop competent individuals capable of addressing national and international security challenges, enhancing employability in defence, civil services, research, and policy domains.
  • Academic – Professional Interface – To serve as a bridge between academia, military professionals, and policymakers through seminars, workshops, field visits, outreach programmes, and collaborative learning for the holistic formation of students.
  • Research and Consultancy – To undertake academic research and offer consultancy services to think tanks, defence institutions, and government agencies, contributing to institutional growth, partnerships, and national development.

Overview

The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies at Don Bosco College (Co-Ed), Yelagiri Hills, is dedicated to the systematic and interdisciplinary study of national security, defence policy, military affairs, and strategic affairs. Established in 2022, the department was founded under the visionary leadership of Rev. Dr. Thaddeus, whose commitment, guidance, and academic foresight laid a strong foundation for its growth. His leadership continues to be regarded as the driving force behind shaping the department’s academic identity, mission, and long-term direction.

The department aims to prepare students for careers in Defence and Uniformed Services, Civil Services, Strategic Research Institutions, Think Tanks, and various other security-related sectors. Since its inception, the department has witnessed consistent growth in academic excellence, student strength, and institutional reputation.

A significant milestone in the department’s journey is the success of its First Outgoing Batch (2022–2025). The students achieved remarkable academic and professional accomplishments, reflecting the department’s strong commitment to quality education, effective mentoring, and holistic development. Notably, Ms. Nisha secured the University 2nd Rank, bringing great pride to the institution through her outstanding academic excellence. Adding to this distinction, Mr. Arun has successfully joined the Indian Army as a General Duty Soldier and is currently undergoing training with the Madras Engineer Group (MEG), Bangalore, while Mr. Mukeshwaran has been appointed as an Assistant Branch Post Master (ABPM) in India Post, marking a strong beginning to his public service career.

Securing such prestigious Central Government positions in the very first batch stands as a significant achievement for the department, reflecting its dedication to academic excellence, disciplined training, and holistic student development. These achievements exemplify the department’s focus on academic excellence, discipline, and career readiness. The department takes great pride in guiding students toward meaningful and impactful professional pathways, reinforcing its mission to develop competent, responsible, and service-oriented individuals.

With a team of six dedicated Faculty Members, the department continues to deliver a curriculum that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical exposure. The programme equips learners with analytical, strategic, and leadership skills essential for understanding and addressing complex national and international security challenges.

The department actively organizes Seminars, Workshops, Research Interactions, Expert Lectures, and Training Sessions, featuring defence professionals, military strategists, researchers, and policymakers. These engagements enrich classroom learning and cultivate a research-oriented mindset among students.

An important highlight of the department’s academic calendar is its Annual Intercollegiate Event, Defence Fusion. Introduced in 2023, the event has grown in scale and prestige, with successful editions conducted in 2023, 2024, and the current academic year 2025. Defence Fusion attracts participation from numerous colleges, providing a dynamic platform for students to engage in academic competitions, strategic discussions, and leadership-oriented activities.
